April 2015 - Working with Google's New Final URLs

Last Updated: May 17, 2016 09:12AM PDT
As you may know, Google recently announced Upgraded URLs.  The primary goal of this change is to make it easier to “tag ads” without having to edit ads (and thus, not have to lose ad history), so overall this is a great change for Bizible and our customers since we rely on tagging ads for Bizible tracking.  This post is meant to give you all the details you need to know on how Upgraded URLs impact your Bizible deployment.

Moving To Final URLs

The changes with Upgraded URLs don’t take effect on a given ad until you “move” from Destination URLs to Final URLs (for more about this, see Google).  Google will automatically move everyone to Final URLs on July 15th.  Until then, you can manually move one or more ads to Final URLs within AdWords.  We are working on an updated release of Bizible to “automagicly” handle all the Upgraded URL cases and tag your ads with minimal history loss and will have support for them by May 15th.

Our recommendation is that Bizible customers wait to move to Final URL until Bizible officially supports it on May 15th.

If you follow our recommendation, your Bizible tagging will work as expected and uninterrupted. However, some customers have asked to move to Final URLs before May 15th, so below is a description of how to do this and the possible risks in doing so.  If you decide to make the move early, you need to handle the issues that may arise, as Bizible doesn’t officially support Upgraded URLs yet.

Moving To Final URLs On Your Own

There are a few things you need to know if you want to move to Final URLs before Bizible officially supports it on May 15th:
  1. If you are using a service that redirects your clicks like bid management providers (Marin or Kenshoo), do not manually migrate to Final URLs, contact your bid management company and have them help you in this process.  Make sure they continue to add the Bizible parameters to the landing page as described here or Bizible tracking will no longer work.

  2. Moving from Destination URLs to Final URLs enables you (and Bizible) to add tags via new “Template” functionality; however Google did not create tracking templates general enough to work with all ad URLs.  Ad URLs that have a “?” in the URL need to have a different tracking template than ad URLs that do not have a “?” in the URL.  For example: http://www.bizible.com will need a different tracking template than http://www.bizible.com/?page=homepage.  Because there is no universal template that can work with both types of Final URLs, we do not recommend migrating to Final URLs unless ALL of you ads exclusively fall into one category.  If some of your ads have a “?” and some do not, you should wait until Bizible fully supports Upgraded URLs on May 15th.  Failing to follow this recommendation will cause Bizible to not work properly and possibly also cause your landing pages not to load when clicks come from AdWords.

Assuming you are (1) not using a redirect service and (2) ALL of your ad URLs either have a “?” or NONE of your ad URLs have a “?”, and you want to move to Final URLs before Bizible officially supports it, here is a guide on how to do it.  Reminder: This is not officially supported by Bizible, you are on your own if you chose to do this and a misconfiguration could cause your landing pages not to load correctly.

Step 1 - Setup an account level tracking template as follows (for more details, see this Google article):
  • Click the Campaigns tab.
  • Click the Shared library link in the side navigation bar.
  • Click URL options.
  • Next to "Tracking template," click Edit.
  • Fill in the URL:
    -If ALL of your ad URLs have a “?” in them, use this URL:
    {lpurl}&_bk={keyword}&_bt={creative}&_bm={matchtype}

    -If NONE of your ad URLs have a “?” in them, use this URL:
    {lpurl}?_bk={keyword}&_bt={creative}&_bm={matchtype}

    -If ONE OR MORE of your ads have a “?” in them, don’t move to Final URLs yet!

  • Click Save.

Step 2 – Migrate your ads to Final URLs.  Follow these instructions from Google for all of your ads.  For more information on this, see this article.
